How to Make a Transparent PNG From an Image

Transparency is not a white background

White pixels are still visible pixels. True transparency is stored in an alpha channel: each pixel can be fully visible, fully transparent, or partially transparent around soft edges.

The checkerboard shown by many editors is only a preview convention. It is not part of the downloaded image.

Create the transparent cutout
