JPG vs PNG: Which Image Format Should You Use?

When JPG is a sensible choice

JPEG compression is designed for continuous-tone images such as photographs. It can reduce file size substantially, which is useful for camera images and web photographs that do not require transparency.

The tradeoff is lossy compression. Repeated saving can introduce halos, blocks, and ringing around sharp boundaries. Those artifacts are especially noticeable when a later edit tries to isolate the subject.

When PNG is the better choice

PNG supports an alpha channel, so it is the normal export format for a subject with no rectangular background. It also preserves sharp interface graphics and flat-color artwork without JPEG-style compression noise.

Photographic PNG files can be much larger than equivalent JPEGs. That does not mean the PNG is wrong; it means lossless storage and transparency carry a size cost.

Choose the source and export separately

The best upload may be an original high-quality JPEG from a camera, while the best background-free export is PNG. Input and output formats do not need to match.

Avoid converting a small, heavily compressed JPEG to PNG before removal merely to change the extension. The conversion cannot recreate missing detail and may only increase the file size.

A practical decision guide

Use JPG for ordinary photographs with an opaque background when size matters. Use PNG for transparent cutouts, logos with soft alpha edges, screenshots, and graphics that need crisp text or shapes.

For a storefront or website, keep a high-quality master and generate delivery versions appropriate to each placement rather than repeatedly editing an already compressed copy.
