How to Prepare Product Images for an Online Store
A professional catalog is consistent before it is elaborate. Shoppers should be able to compare items without each photograph changing scale, alignment, lighting, or background treatment.
Define the image system first
Choose a common aspect ratio, canvas size, background treatment, and product scale for a category. A tall bottle and a wide bag do not need identical pixel dimensions, but their visual padding and alignment should feel intentional.
Check the current requirements of the marketplace or storefront where the images will appear. File type, minimum size, and background rules can differ.
Capture consistent source photographs
Use stable lighting, camera position, and distance across a product set. Keep the entire item in focus when practical and leave margin around protruding parts.
Record color as accurately as the workflow allows. Background removal cannot correct inconsistent white balance or lighting between products.
Remove and review the background
Create a transparent master, then check corners, openings, labels, reflective surfaces, and the contact area. Compare with the source so real product details are not mistaken for leftover background.
Apply the final approved background after the cutout is reviewed. Keeping the transparent master makes it easier to reuse the product in banners, category pages, and seasonal layouts.
Export, name, and describe assets
Use stable filenames that identify the product and view without stuffing keywords. Preserve a master separately from compressed delivery copies, and verify that resizing has not distorted the item.
Write alternative text for the information the product image conveys. A transparent background does not make an image decorative when the product itself is important to the page.
Run a catalog-level quality check
Review products together, not only one at a time. Compare scale, centering, padding, brightness, background color, and shadow treatment across the row or grid where shoppers will see them.
Retain the source, transparent master, and delivery export as separate files. This avoids repeatedly cutting out or recompressing an already processed image.
Conclusion
A strong store image system combines consistent capture, careful cutout review, predictable layout, and accessible delivery. The transparent PNG is a reusable master inside that larger workflow.
